My last painting, A River Runs through Us, explores the symbolic nature of Chinese landscape painting and it’s caught my imagination.

I struggled with the last image and this one was similarly difficult (never mind that it’s 12″ x 16″, a size I find hard to work with given my tools). The Chinese literati felt that painting expressed character–were your lines strong, elegant, and graceful? Did they waiver and lack intuition and vision? It all shows.

I wonder what this Rorschach of a landscape shows about my character. Perhaps not only my strengths and weaknesses, but also what’s on my mind. Mountains. Water falling. Lone tree. Colors inspired by Odilon Redon. Style adapted from Chinese brush painting of the Song Dynasty. What’s it all about?

Or maybe a landscape is sometimes just a landscape.

Take care,

I.
