Here’s a little more work done on my daisies picture. At this stage, the flowers are being “pulled out” of the background colour. Its not always ideal to use white paint at this early stage, but because the surface is still wet, it’s all blending in and turning mauve.

I’ve marked in one of the daisy centres, just to get an idea of size.

In the glass are various reflections and dark areas, but I want to keep them simple on such a small board. So far, all the painting has been done with two brushes; one filbert bristle brush for the background, and a smaller, rather scruffy old bristle flat for making the marking-out and white areas. You don’t always need posh brushes; I saw an oil demo once where the artist’s brushes were so incredibly scraggy that it made you wonder whether he ever did any decent work with them. His motto was that almost any brush is worth saving, because it still has its own characteristics and uses, even in old age. Bit like people.
And, below, a further stage again. Now I’ve brought in a dab of yellow. These daisies seem to have cadmium yellow and lemon yellow in their centres, plus greens in the shadowed areas. Again, because of the small size, I want to try and avoid including every tiny detail.

The curved reflection of the little board that the glass stands on is now painted in. At this point, everything is getting too sticky for my liking, so I’m stopping to let it rest for a day or two, then continue.

Next picture update should be tomorrow, but if not then it won’t be till Monday, because I’m spending this weekend packing up bits and pieces, ready to strip wallpaper next week.
