Natalie Gulbis started the day four shots behind Julie Inkster. Gulbis started well with birdies at the first, sixth and ninth holes.
Gulbis shot a final-round 70 to finish at four under. Jang Jeong birdied the last hole to force a playoff with Gulbis.
In the playoff, Gulbis two-putted from 25 feet for birdie and the win. “Fortunately, it ended about a foot away and I tapped it in,” Gulbis said. “I wouldn’t have wanted it to be much farther than that.”
It took six years, but Gulbis finally got her first win showing she is more than just a pretty face.
Gulbis was sprayed with champagne by Christina Kim after she won.
Gulbis, who won $450,000, gave part of the credit for her win to a back injury two months ago that forced her to take a month off and make some adjustments.
“I had to change my golf swing because of my injury,” she said. “I was kind of thinking this might be a blessing in disguise.”
