Killzone 2: Showcasing The Graphical Prowess Of The PS3?

It seems like the Xbox 360’s showing at E3 wasn’t quite as disappointing as some people had hoped, as games touted for it at this year’s show scooped more top industry awards than the PS3 and Wii’s new games combined. The highly regarded Game Critics Awards handed out 11 awards for Xbox 360 games (up 8 on 2006, 9 on 2005), 8 for PS3 games (up 6 from 2006, 8 from 2005), and a lowly 1 award for the Wii (down 3 from 2006), which as far as I can tell was for Madden ‘08 and also applied to all the other platforms as well.

Hmm.

So, here are a few honourable mentions:

  • Best Of Show: Rock Band (Xbox 360 / PS3)
  • Best Original Game: LittleBigPlanet (PS3)
  • Best Console Game: Mass Effect (Xbox 360)
  • Best Action/Adventure Game: Bioshock (Xbox 360 / PS3)
  • Best Racing Game: Burnout Paradise (Xbox 360 / PS3)
  • Best Sports Game: Madden NFL 08 (All Platforms)
  • Best Fighting Game: Virtua Fighter 5 (Xbox 360)
  • Best Social/Casual/Puzzle: Rock Band (Xbox 360 / PS3)
  • Best Online Multiplayer: Halo 3 (Xbox 360)
  • Special Commendation For Graphics: Killzone 2 (PS3)

The best conclusion I can draw from the list is this: Brushing aside the fact that a lot more exclusive 360 games snagged awards, the Xbox 360 and PS3 are looking pretty even right now for mainstream cross-platform titles. So unless you’re particularly looking forward to LittleBigPlanet or you want to marvel at Killzone 2’s graphics, you’d be better off saving a few bob and getting yourself (or the kids) a 360 this Christmas.

The other thing I could, but probably don’t want to conclude from this is that the future’s not looking so bright for the Wii - have people really tired of it as quickly as I feared they would? Does an “innovation” like motion control stop being so exciting when all your games use it? Or is is that Nintendo don’t really care about E3, or maybe that the Wii just isn’t appreciated by the mainstream gaming media? All these questions and more will probably not be answered some time in the future…

So, let the flames begin! If you don’t own a console, which one tempts you the most? And if you do, which one is it, and why did you choose it over the others? Try to be nice!

I found this site where you answer their corporate survey and they will send you a free Nintendo Wii!
