What is a classic children’s book? Where can I go to learn which books are considered classics? How will I know if my child is ready for a certain classic? Are these books any better than contemporary stories?
These are some major questions for the literate parent who is ready to introduce good reading to a beloved child. Classic children’s books are those which endure as favorites because they are excellent stories, well written and often with a moral point, and they are creative, awakening in the child the adventure of imagination. Whether the little listener hears about Peter Rabbit running through the farmer’s garden or reads about young Jim Hawkins as he deals with Long John Silver, a classic book will engage him; it will place him within the story and cause him to picture it all in his own imagination! What young girl hasn’t imagined herself astride a noble horse in one of Marguerite Henry’s famous stories, or traveling back in time with one of the American Girls?
