We never have any quiet time! I just need some time to relax! Can’t we just stay home? These are common refrains in young families today. We all have our precious schedules, full of meaningful (really?) activities. We have to make sure that our kids have the proper indoctrination to sports, the arts, extracurricular camps and workshops, social life (the birthday party circuit, etc.) not to mention the accelerated classes at school that they need to get on the right track and get into the right college!
But when do we spend quiet time with our children? (No, time in the car/taxi does not count.) I am referring to time at home or away that is unclaimed by planned activity…time spent in each other’s company listening to music or to the gentle rhythm of a stream, sipping a cup of tea or cocoa or a soda, just being quiet together. The best times like this for our family are filled with books. That lazy afternoon or late evening when each one is absorbed in a great read, and all are content to be quiet and comfy; the times which abide in memory as peaceful.
