There’s nothing ‘wrong,’ in the abstract, with paying for dating advice, whether in book form or in person. There’s just plenty wrong in the particulars. The main issue is precisely that we’ve structured a society in which judgments of utility, value, and worth must be made at the maximum possible level of abstraction. Essentially this means tacking on the all-purpose catchphrase "for whatever reason" (lack of time, shyness, sociopathology, the kind of freakiness you can make fun of, the kind of freakiness it’s unfair to make fun of), the better to lump every kind of legitimate and illegitimate predicate of the general practice into a big phenomenological headcheese that defies judgmental categorization.
