Godaddy likes to make flashy commercials that skirt the edge of broadcast standards, they like the image of being a rebel in the webhosting game. That image is a Godaddy has once again taken a site offline with zero notice. This site did not vilate the terms of service by hosting porn, or hate speech, no, it was taken offline because Godaddy decided it was their job to determine what legal, public, information you should be privy too. Rate my cop is a site dedicated to allowing the public to express concerns and delight with their local police departments.
In a wonderful example of unenlightened thought, one high ranking police officer actually tried to push off the idea that having real names of a police officer online would be dangerous because it exposes them out there according to a story on WIRED. He also wants to make complaining about a police officer illegal. Better get a those patrol cares repainted Oppress and Gag seems more appropriate for the sentiments expressed by Chief Jerry Dyer. Almost every single officer of the law I have ever encountered has been a professional who I would view with nothing less than the utmost respect, sadly Chief Dyers comments do little to re-enforce that opinion.
The real issue Godaddys actions, and lack of appropriate actions. There needs to be a web masters Bill of Rights. It is completely unacceptable that a hosting company should feel free to take a site offline with zero notice when there has been no violation of the terms of service. They have a right to decide not to do business with anyone they want. That is mitigated however by the contractual obligation they entered into when they accepted payment for hosting services. Godaddy has a problem with rating police officers, they should have never accepted payment for hosting. ‘Its Automated’ is not an excuse, once you accept payment the onus falls on you to provide at lease a reasonable notice (I say 7 days) before taking an entire online presence down. I cannot fathom for one moment that anyone would have any issue figuring out what RATEMYCOP.COM was all about.

I wasn’t impressed Godaddy and their hosting. Domain names are fine with Go daddy, but for hosting, I wouldn’t touch them with a 10 foot pole. Read my Godaddy review.
