So here is an interesting story that I thought about writing a forum thread about but never got around to. Today while browsing the web I saw an article with similar sentiments to mine and made me realize I am not the only one who noticed this. So I decided it’s time to write up an article and inform horror fans of this before they fall victim to it as well.
Let me start by saying I watched 13: Game of Death with a friend who rented it at Blockbuster. Blockbuster is the EXCLUSIVE home to all the Dimension Extreme DVD’s which there have been many of over the last few months. I watched this version, decided it was interesting enough for my collection. I gave it a second viewing only to find out the one I bought was different than the one I saw from Blockbuster. The grossest scene in the movie(task number 5) in the Blockbuster version was even longer and grosser in the Unrated version I bought. There was also some added gore to a scene that didnt show any gore the first time I saw it(task number 10). The Unrated version really had some good additional content compared with the Blockbuster counterpart.
Similar findings were discovered and written about over in the Fangoria article, but they focused on the recent release of the French film Inside. Turns out that they discovered over 7 minutes of gorey footage was removed from the version of Inside being rented at Blockbuster compared with the store bought Unrated version. From the sounds of things, it made a significant difference in the film as well.
So the question remains, with Blockbuster being the exclusive rental home of Dimension Extreme DVD titles, why would Dimension sign on with a company who’s only willing to put out censored versions? The Unrated version of 13:Game of Death was noticably different than the Blockbuster version and while I havent seen the edited Inside, I can only assume it cuts out lots of good explicit content. It just seems to me that if you sign a company to bethe Exclusive home to these DVD’s they should be offering the same great experience that people are getting by buying the movie. I thought the whole reason for calling it Dimension Extreme would be to provide Unrated film experiences, not edited fluff versions.
I have NEVER seen a Dimension Extreme DVD on a store shelf rated R, they are always Unrated. It just seems to me Dimension made a mistake by signing an exlcuive contract with Blockbuster and then having to create special R rated versions of their releases for them. Why go through all that extra work to create edited R rated versions that will only be offered at one specific rental outlet? Seems to me that maybe Dimension made a mistake by giving their Extreme label exclusively to Blockbuster. Fans are starting to notice they are being short changed on these rentals and are voicing their displeasure.
So if you rent from Blockbuster via online rental or through their stores, just be aware that the next Dimension Extreme title you watch may not be quite as Extreme as it should be. The whole deal just doesnt make sense to me because after all, it is called Dimension Extreme not Dimension Softcore.
