“Pilate therefore said to Him, ‘Are You a king then?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.’ Pilate said to Him, ‘What is truth?’” John 18: 37-38 NKJV
The Message states Jesus’ confession like this “… Everyone who cares for truth, who has any feeling for the truth, recognizes my voice.”
Now, to me this piece is one of the most profound in the Bible. The Word of God is set in Hebrew/Jewish culture and tradition and now suddenly it meets head-on with the humanistic and philosophical tradition of the Romans (the shaping of western society till today).
Profound, because the quality of everything in western society as we know it today, are formed, compared and measured to the Art, Skills and Thoughts of the Greeks and Hellenists that formed the basis of the Roman Empire: the Golden Cut; the Golden Ratio (1.618); the search for perfection; the absolute quest for truth!
What is truth?
It’s not really a question, is it? It’s a statement.
The Roman culture (like western society today) has perfected the Act of eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil; and came to the sobering and illusioned conclusion that Truth is relative.
Now, if I have never heard a paradoxal statement, I have heard one now. There is one truth and many lies. For we are constantly seeking the one and only measurement we can measure up all things, the one truth. As soon as that measurement changes, our calculations will be different as well and thus our concluded answer.
Fahrenheit versus Celsius; Kilometres versus Miles, Pounds versus Kilograms.
How do you measure sanity? What is your standard?
Jesus came to witness to the One Standard all things should be measured up to: The Truth, God’s Word!
And this is where I’m getting at: As soon as you start degrading The Truth to a relative equation of the factors of this fallen, imperfect world we live in, your Standard becomes unstable and your calculations as implausible and fanciful carbon-dating.
We are to measure our thoughts to Gods Word, not measuring the comprehension of Gods Word to our own experiences and understanding.
Everybody have sex before marriage, so God’s word are surely not that serious about this issue; being in a gay relationship is loving and caring, surely God’s will forbidding same sex relationships are misinterpreted or overstated; I don’t see the damage of my distasteful vocabulary usage, surely God’s Word’s encouragement to tame my tong is a needless virtue saved for nuns and monks… the list goes on.
I read an article this weekend where Oprah claim there is more than one path that leads to God, surely Jesus can’t be the only Way. So many are students of Oprah’s goodwill and teachings on helping relief the hurts and struggles of humanity; surely what she is saying now must be the truth.
Oprah makes the same mistake as our Roman officer, Pontius Pilate: grading every conclusion a relative truth and so sending God’s Son to Hell without realising what he is doing.
This is my Fear:
- We do not know Gods Word!
- We have lost our “feeling for the truth”
- We interpret God’s Word as a relative force to our own human, sensuous experinces and understanding (forgetting we are the creations of His Word)

WAKE UP! THE DEVIL PROWL LIKE A ROARING LION TO DECEIVE AND DESTRUCT YOU! START SUBMITTING YOURSELF TO GOD’S TRUTH AND EQUIP YOURSELF WITH GOD’S WORD (before you are crucifying the one you are actually searching for, The Truth)
